The Golden Nugget is a very common variety grown commercially by many nurseries. Unfortunately, many opinions waver about this variety due to many ungrafted seedlings being sold as Golden Nuggets, which tends to happen once a cultivar becomes commercialized. The true Golden Nugget has a larger, meatier fruit and tastes very similar to a Tomcot Apricot in both taste and texture. Unfortunately, this variety falls short in around tolerances and resistances and is very susceptible to various pests, diseases and weather conditions—especially aphids, rust, blight, overwatering, sun scald and freezing. With proper care, however, the tree can become very ornamental with vigorous growth, heavy branching, and large leathery leaves. Most growers utilize it for grafting purposes due to its continuous formation of suckers and branches, and the support of its very large and strong limbs in maturity.
